About

Hi!

My name is Petru Mustea and I’ve been breeding romanian mioritic shepherd dogs for the last 17 years. You can find the breed standard informations >>here<<, but I would like to tell you what makes this breed so special.

Long time ago the dog was bred to protect sheep from bears and wolves, so it’s fearless, and he will defend his master against no matter what. The same thing can be told about many other strong breeds, but the mioritic shepherd is different, his strength is equaled by his gentleness. Used to run free on the hills next to the sheep-pen, the mioritic dogs will not attack a stranger, but simply block his path and drive him away from the sheep, unless the shepherd doesn’t call them back.

So these dogs were bred to not attack unprovoked an that’s why, even though they are immensely strong, they are perfect family dogs. They love to play, they are gentle with children, reserved with strangers, and brave protecters if the situation calls for it.

Beside all that, the look and the posture of the mioritic shepherds make this breed one of the most beautiful in the world. It’s impossible not to fall in love with the mioritic after you know one. And that is the purpose of this site, to make this breed as well-known as it deserves.

My husband and I recently adopted a Mioritc who was bred in the USA by his late owner,John Handley. John apparently imported the parents from ROmania and got at least one litter. He died suddenly and the rescue group who placed his dogs had limited information about them. Did you know John?
Our Cuza is a wonderful dog and we’d like to know how to make sure he lives a long happy life.
We live in Alexandria VA, near Washington DC, and it’s possible that Cuza’s mother was owned by a former ambassador.

    Regards,
    Barbara Fiedler

I didn’t know John but if Cuza is a pure breed mioritic from a good line than it will also be tough and with no health issues so it should live long and happy :) .

    Petru,
I emailed a couple of weeks ago to say that I am interested to reserve a puppy from the litter expected at the end of July. Haven’t heard back from you and wondering if you received this email.

I have a newspaper clipping from the paper in Rochester, Minnesota, USA that I have kept since December of 1998 about the Mioritic breed of dog. I would like to find out more about the breed, especially it’s temperment and personality. I have had giant breed dogs for over 25ys so have experience with large dogs but not with dogs who have protection instincts in their genitics. I do have an English Mastiff who is very imposing to see but he is very gentle and loves people but I am not sure what he would do if necessary.
Any information you can send me would be greatly appreicated – also the cost of one of these dogs including transportation to the United States.
    Thank you for your time,.
    Sue

    As you can understand reading the articles here, the mioritic breed has a very balanced temper, gentle with the kids, relaxed and confident; the proctective bit comes into play under agressive behaviour from strangers;

that is the natural temperment of a mioritic shepherd, but if the master doesn’t know how to nurish that temper, beeing over protective, or worried in certain enviroments, or he forces the dog to do things instead of giving the puppy time to understand a new enviroment or situation on his own rithm, that could affect his personality.

A puppy under 4 motnh costs 500 euros at my kennel, tha transport to America is a bot more expensive than the dog itself (about 600 euros); about the exchange rate you should chek it, it’s probably not the same as here.

I have Cuza’s mother from the post above. She is wonderful and I would like to get another puppy. I was told by Cameila Pircia that you had puppies available.

When I was younger my best buddy(I was in my 30′s) was a Great Pyrenees and his buddy was my Newfoundland bitch. His only fault was his assertive posture towards strangers who he deemed dangerous to the family. The Mioritic you describe seems perfect( a Newfi and Pyr all in one). The long process of getting the right one is about to commence. I need to learn a hell of a lot more. Beautiful Dog !!
    .Cheers from Canada

I have only recently become familiar with the Mioritic, having taken a male Mioritic from rescue(thought to be only example in UK). Having had him now for 3 months, all the family are now huge fans of the breed. We also have a male Russian Black Terrier, the 2 dogs have adapted well to one another. Any info or guidance on the Mioritic would be greatly appreciated. Also we think NOUR looks excellent dog.

It’s good to hear that a mioritic found a good home and I’m glad you are able to experience this amazing breed; unfortunately I realized I don’t have enough time to give general guidance, I can barely answer short questions; that’s why in the upcoming month I’m trying to right a guide with everything a mioritic owner should need based on my experience; when it’s ready I’m going to let you know.
